The “Rare & Exquisite” collage series explores ideas of belonging, safe spaces and the notion of people of color as ‘endangered species.’

Various news media have described African Americans (for example, “a good black man” or “our black girls”) as being under threat of extinction. Their skin color makes them more visible, especially in mostly-white spaces. Similarly, endangered animals possess distinctive coloring and belong to a specific habitat: they are the ultimate “locals” of their area.

The artist created human-butterfly hybrids, '“pinned” — with railroad spikes — in the style of Victorian butterfly collections. The artist has also chosen to use colonial-era maps as a comment on the false narratives that lead to racial violence.
